When it comes to keeping desert dwellers like bearded dragons as pets, mimicking their natural environment becomes more important to ensure their optimal health & growth. That said, you must provide your pet with a proper 30-40% humidity level, which should remain constant.

After knowing this, many wonder what happens when the humidity exceeds the ideal range for a bearded dragon. One such frequently asked question by many beardies’ owners is, ‘Is 50 humidity too high for bearded dragon?’.

Today, I will give you an in-depth answer & analysis of ‘Is 50 humidity bad for bearded dragons?’. After that, we will also discuss what happens when you keep your dragon at a constant 50% humidity level and how to lower it.

But before all of this, let’s begin with learning the answer to the first question: is 50 humidity too high for bearded dragons?

Is 50 Humidity Too High For Bearded Dragon

Yes, 50% humidity is too high for bearded dragons. Keeping bearded dragons at a humidity level beyond 40% may result in long-term health issues like respiratory infections and skin problems. The University of Queensland suggests that bearded dragons only need an ideal 30-40% level.

Not only bearded dragon too high humidity can cause respiratory infections & skin issues like bacterial infections or fungal growth on the skin, but it may also result in mycotic disease and ulcerative or necrotic dermatitis. Not only is spiked-up humidity an issue, but if you find bearded dragon humidity too low, like 20%, it may result in dehydration or shedding issues. (If wondering, “Is 20 Humidity Too Low For Bearded Dragon,” then the answer is yes!).

Since there are so many health risks for keeping bearded dragons at high humidity levels for too long, you should always monitor the tank’s humidity level using the right gauge. Therefore, invest in high-quality, reliable, durable digital hygrometers and place each on the opposite side of a tank. For a detailed view, you first need to place one hygrometer on the hotter side of the tank and another on the cooler side.

Also, if you have a budget, get one more and place it at the center of your bearded dragon tank. Three hygrometers give you better pictures of humidity readings, reliability & accuracy. However, ensure you don’t install the probes near water bowls or live plants, which may give you inaccurate readings. Also, watch out for the height because the humidity level can vary at various heights.

Since you know high humidity levels are detrimental to beardies’ health & what humidity do bearded dragons need, you might wonder, “How Long Can A Bearded Dragon Live In High Humidity?” well, the answer is tricky. Below I’m mentioning a few tips on how to lower humidity in a bearded dragon tank, especially when it spikes up to 50%. After that, we will also look at frequently asked questions about bearded dragons’ humidity requirements.

5 Tips To Lower The 50 Humidity In Bearded Dragon Tank

Provide Adequate Ventilation

The bearded dragon tank’s environment becomes humid with no proper airflow. Hence, it’s important that you first provide proper air flow to your bearded dragon tank, which is very helpful in maintaining humidity levels at a constant range. To solve the issue of 50 humidity level, check ventilation first.

Too many times, I have frequently warned people about not using plastic lids or anything similar because it never allows any air to enter the enclosure. Instead, consider an air screen/metal lid with small openings on the top of your bearded dragon’s tank.

Indeed, I am referring to the mesh wire that allows fresh air to flow in the tank. In addition to this, make sure that the airflow in the room is also proper & fresh. If inadequate ventilation is the issue, you can use a fan to create proper airflow or turn on air conditioning to improve airflow.

Remove Items Like Water Bowl & Live Plants

Another thing that almost all experts suggest is to remove items like water dishes & live plants, which often interfere with the humidity level inside tanks. Moisture-absorbent decorations can keep the humidity as high as 50%, which isn’t healthy for beardies. If you have used a water dish in your pets’ enclosure, which is often recommended, it’s time to remove it to lower the humidity level.

The truth is bearded dragons rarely drink water, especially freestanding water. Therefore, using a large bowl of water to encourage your pet to drink or bathe in it will make little difference but increase the humidity level. Also, if the owner places the water bowl on the hottest side or beneath a UVB lamp / similar heating source, it increases the humidity level. Finding bearded dragon humidity 70 at night because of the water bowl is a common issue. Also, live plants interfere with the humidity and raise it.

Since you will be watering the live plants regularly, evaporation and transpiration will always increase the moisture content inside your pet’s tank, raising the humidity. Firstly, check whether the water bowl is on the cooler side. If it’s on the hotter side, you need to remove it. But, if the water bowl is already on cooler end, consider removing it for a few hours and measuring the humidity level again.

I understand some like live plants for a better aesthetic view. If this is the case, you can temporarily swap them with the fake or artificial ones until you find the right setting for your pet. Also, if there is a humid hide, remove it! If you find bearded dragon humidity too high at night, read this guide: Mastering Bearded Dragon Night Time Humidity.

Use Rice Sock (My Favourite DIY Method To Lower Humidity)

I know you will not believe me, but rice is a great moisture absorbent that can help lower humidity in any designated space, including the tank. This is also my favorite device DIY method that I teach my students & community to lower humidity levels in a reptile tank. You need some rice and a shock.

Firstly, you must partially fill the sock with rice and tie it properly so your dragon can’t ingest it. Since this rice sock interferes with the aesthetic view of your bearded dragon tank, you can place it somewhere less visible and leave it there.

But before you do this, it is important to note that this method is only effective when the humidity deviates by only a few percent. If there is a major difference in humidity level, you might have to use additional methods, including socks with rice. For Bearded Dragon 50 humidity, you can also try this sock rice method.

Install Dehumidifier

For people looking for a quick solution for a 50 humidity level problem inside the bearded dragon tank, I suggest you install a dehumidifier. Even though it costs you a bit and may hamper your monthly budget, it can be useful, especially during seasonal changes.

I have seen people claiming that dehumidifiers are unnecessary for bearded dragons, which is true. A dehumidifier is unnecessary for Pro or experienced people with many bearded Dragons. But dehumidifiers are important for people who have recently adopted or want to adopt beardies.

Being an inexperienced bearded dragon owner, you might have many problems in the first few months that cannot be tackled in a single day. Hence, dehumidifiers can greatly help lower humidity levels if they exceed the recommended range.

Change Tank Location

After several tries, if the humidity is constantly 50, you might have placed the tank on the wrong side of the room. If the bearded dragon tank is beside the window, the cold draft or direct sunlight cooling/heating the glass can interfere with the temperature & humidity levels inside the tank. If so, I suggest you promptly change the tank location.

In addition to this, if the room is already humid, the beardies’ tank kept inside can make it harder to fix the situation. Therefore, I suggest you first measure the room’s humidity level using one of your hygrometers to check whether it is causing a problem. If the room is humid, you can relocate the entire bearded dragon tank to a different one.
